Taking the Mystery out of Mindfulness Tips for You 

Mindfulness is a natural quality that we all possess. It’s available to us in every moment if we take the time to appreciate it. Simply Mind and Body helps people to connect the power of mindfulness and the extraordinary healing energy of the body.  Our minds have the power to create palaces or poverty, health or disease, peace or mayhem. We can lose weight, regain freedom of movement and open our hearts and minds to a happy and healthy life. When we practice mindfulness we’re practicing the art of creating space for ourselves— a space between us and our reactions, a space between what we perceive and what is real. Here are a few things to consider before you begin:


  • You can practice mindfulness anywhere.  There is no need to go out and buy a special cushion or bench, no need to sit with your legs crossed and hum  Om—just devote some time and space each day to access you mindfulness skills. (warning you won’t want to operate a moving vehicle.)

  • There’s no way to stop your thoughts.  What? This what we often hear about meditation however this is not the goal. And it can’t be done anyway.  We are not looking for a woo-woo moment or some blissful encounter. All you are trying to do is stay in the present moment without judgment. Do you want to lose weight?  Change your chattering thoughts.  Sounds easy? Well, its not.

  • Your mind will wander be kind.  As you practice paying attention to what’s going on in your body and mind, thoughts will arise. But the wandering mind isn’t something fear or struggle with. It’s part of human nature. It also provides the magic moment for the first essential piece of mindfulness practice, the piece that we believe leads to healthier, more agile brains; the moment when you recognize that your mind has wandered. Because if you can notice this, then you can consciously bring your mind back to the present moment. Practice. The more you do it the easier it gets. And your life will change!

  • Your judgy brain will try to take over.  The second important piece in mindfulness is the “without judgment” part. We’re all guilty of listening to the critic in our heads more than we should.  Researchers report a correlation between our self-judgments,weight gain and our ability to lose that weight after 50. It's easy to get caught up in your self-critical thoughts. When you practice mindfulness, try not to judge yourself for whatever thoughts pop-up. Notice judgments arise, make a mental not for them (some people label them “thinking”) and let them pass.  Soon you will notice a change in you everyday pattern of judgment and you will sleep more soundly. 

  • It’s all about returning you attention again and again to mindfulness.  It seems like the mind is wired to get carried away in thought. Taking a brief break each day, to be present in the moment, clear your thoughts is putting money in your mental and physical bank. We use the sensation of breathing as an anchor to the present moment.  And every time you return to the breath, you reinforce your ability to it again,  Call it a bicep curl for the brain.


While mindfulness might seem simple, it’s not necessarily all that easy. The real work is to make time every day to just to keep doing it. Practice Practice Practice

It's fruits,  vegetables, tubers, whole grains, and legumes and minimizing meats, chicken or fish, dairy products and eggs, as well as highly refined flour, sugar, and oil.

So what's left to eat? Rest assured that you'll be eating in a way that people have thrived on for thousands of years. I believe that you will find--as I do-- that this way of mindful way of eating and being makes for a very tasty and satisfying life.
